On September 16th, Barneys New York celebrated the grand opening of its fifth flagship store.








On September 16th, Barneys New York celebrated the grand opening of its fifth flagship store.

The new store is located in Fukuoka prefecture, in the heart of Fukuoka’s commercial district, a scenic part of town with a leafy green park and a historic shrine just across the road.

The main focal point of the store is its unique facade design. The façade is lit up by twelve light beams, making it stand out against the other buildings in the shopping area and grabbing the attention of passersby with its striking display.

Upon entering the first floor, the visitors’ attention is first captured by a beautiful and large, oval-shaped sculpture that symbolizes Barneys New York and plays the important role of visually connecting the first to second floor.

The building consists of four floors, with a gross area of approximately 2,600 square meters. The basement floor is the men's hall. On the first floor, shoppers will find jewelry, handbags, accessories, fragrances and men’s products, while the second floor is home to women’s clothing and shoes. The third floor is reserved for women’s products as well as home décor items.

Although the store has an abundance of merchandise on display, care has been taken to closely adhere to Barneys New York’s ‘classic and modern’ concept, ensuring a spacious feel is maintained throughout the store.

Barney New York’s theme of "good taste, luxury and humor", which has been the brand’s core concept in Japan from the start, was realized in an imaginative manner by Mr. Katsuhiko Taniguchi, the brand’s creative director, and emanates from each aspect of the store design.

Both the Ginza and Kobe stores, also designed by us,had floor compositions of three floors. Since the newest store had four floors, our biggest challenge lay in creating a space which would draw shoppers to all floors. In order to achieve this,

We had to come up with a plan of how to make each floor uniquely attractive while ensuring the consistency between space and products was maintained.
To solve this quandary, we prepared various ideas and tools for various place and emphasized the change in space design between each floor in order to guarantee that visitors have a unique shopping experience whenever they go to Barneys New York.

それらをを創造していく上で、バーニーズクリエイティブディレクターの谷口勝彦氏を筆頭にデザインを進めてきました。 時には末端の協力業者のところに出向し、「バーニーズとは」を共有し、何度も何度も試作を重ねながらも物造りを行って来ました。

From start to finish, I have approached this project with the mindset that Barneys New York is a magical place.

To evoke the ambiance which is unique to Barneys New York, and enable customers to fully appreciate its distinctive space and products, required concentrating on space design and understanding the story behind the brand.

Collaborating closely with Mr Katsuhiko Taniguchi, creative director of Barneys New York, we paid a number of visits to vendors and partners to define the essence of Barneys New York. As a result, we were able to create an exceptional space at Barneys New York Fukuoka, one which will enthrall customers and keep them coming back.
